My 2020 fishing season kicked off with two back-to-back tournaments with the McKinney Bass Club on Martin Creek Lake and Brandy Branch Reservoir in east Texas.
The Martin Creek Lake tournament took place on January 25th. I fished with my buddy, Robert for both tournaments. I’ve never been on Martin Creek before, but we headed out for a little pre-fishing the afternoon before and were able to find a few good spots. In fact, I caught probably a 4-5 lber not long after we got out on the lake that day. So needless to say, we were feeling pretty good about the possibility of doing well in the tournament that weekend.
We ended up placing third with a five bass limit of 13.37 pounds and a big bass weight of 3.20 lbs. That wasn’t enough to win overall big bass but a third place finish was respectable. It put us in a good spot for our AOY points.
The very next day on January 26th, we fished the Brandy Branch Reservoir, which I had also never fished before. We didn’t have time to pre-fish this lake so we were just going to go out there and swing for the fences. Brandy Branch and Martin Creek are both power plant lakes, so at this time of year even though it was still cold, the water temps were pretty warm. We were able to put a pattern together and came up with another five bass limit.
We placed second with 12.18 pounds and I weighed in the overall big bass of 4.71 lbs that day. This finish put us in the lead for AOY points so we were pretty pumped up about that.
Unfortunately we had to miss the Lake Palestine tournament on February 29th because we had other tournaments on our schedule. But even without fishing that tournament, we are still sitting in second place overall AOY. Our next McKinney Bass Club tournament is scheduled for March 28th on Lake Texoma. Robert and I are the defending champs on Texoma, so we have a lot to live up to. I’m hoping we can make it happen again this year.
